After retiring around 1859, Alexander Mickiewicz, a former professor of Roman law at the Kharkov University, bought the Gubernja estate in Polesie and moved there with his wife Teresa and their two children, Franciszek and Maria. In Gubernia he wrote the works “Encyclopedia of Law” and “Course of Roman Law” (unpublished).
